“AfrikaBurn” Festival 2014

Afrika Burn, 2014.

After having attended the 2013 edition of the festival as a regular public, me and my Saloon das Minas Collective partner decided to apply for a soundsystem theme camp in the following year and got accepted.

We then started a whole year of crowdfunding events such as parties, workshops and art auctions to raise money to make our international soundsystem camp possible.

And so, in partnership with Barulho.org collective, in 2014 me and 9 other Brazilians embarked on a month journey to South Afrika, this time with a more specific goal in mind: building a big soundsystem in the middle of Tankwa Town desert.

Unfortunately I don’t have so many photos of this adventure, because in 2014 we weren’t so used to document every minute of our lives. But here are some of the most interesting memories I could find.

It was one of the greatest and most edifying experinces of my life that thought me a lot about collectivity, resilience and staying hydrated as much as possible.

Three biggest lessons I’ve learned in this megalomaniac life project: 1) Never underestimate the size of a 1-ton trailler. It might not be enough, 2) Always search beforehand at what time the city trash disposing place will be open and most important 3) Be ALWAYS prepared for a sandstorm.

For this whole 1-year journey, my role was to:

  • Collectively conceptualize, curate, produce and advertise several fundraising events in São Paulo, such as parties, art auctions and more

  • Had several online planning meetings with the South African crew

  • Collectively with São Paulo and South African crews conceptualize, produce (remotely and in person), budget and realize our theme camp at Tankwa Town, where the festival happens

  • Disassemble the whole theme camp and taking care of the post-production logistics according to the festival rules such as taking the whole waste back to Cape Town city and disposing it there. Returning production items and props, soundsystems, trailer, rental cars, etc.

Producing and participating in several other independent cultural events

  • Queer Tattoo Convention – Berlin (2019, 2023)
